The opportunity

Te Taumata o Ngāti Whakaue Iho Ake Trust is seeking a dedicated and compassionate individual for the role of Emergency Housing Navigator.

This position plays a crucial role in supporting whānau who have experienced chronic homelessness to secure stable, long-term housing and reconnect with their wellbeing. You will walk alongside whānau, advocating for their needs and helping them navigate the systems required to achieve safe and sustainable homes.

This is a rewarding opportunity to contribute to iwi-led housing solutions that make homelessness rare, brief, and non-recurring across our community.

Key responsibilities

  • Engaging directly with participants in managed temporary housing to identify needs, aspirations, and barriers to long-term housing and wellbeing.
  • Building and maintaining trusting relationships that support personal goal setting and progress.
  • Conducting holistic assessments and developing individualised care and navigation plans.
  • Coordinating referrals and follow-ups with external agencies and service providers.
  • Supporting participants to access mental health, addiction, and social services.
  • Empowering whānau to develop self-sustaining income pathways and independent living skills.
  • Advocating for the rights and needs of whānau within a kaupapa Māori framework.
  • Maintaining professional documentation, data integrity, and accurate reporting.
  • Responding to crisis situations in a calm and culturally safe manner.
  • Contributing to wider housing team goals and continuous service improvement.
Desired skills and experience
  • Proven experience in housing, whānau ora, or social services.
  • Strong knowledge of Māori realities, systemic housing barriers, and available social services.
  • Excellent relationship management, communication, and organisational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Experience managing casework and navigating complex systems.
  • Competent in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Understanding of Te Reo Māori me ōna tikanga.
Qualifications
  • A tertiary qualification in social work, community health, counselling, or related discipline (or equivalent experience).
  • Clean, current full driver's licence (desirable).
