Based in beautiful Whanganui Te Oranganui is a kaupapa Māori organisation who offers a range of health and well-being services for whānau in the Whanganui region and surrounding districts.

Toiora Whānau has a range of health and social supports available to whānau. All our services are voluntary and embraces a Whānau Ora approach that sees whānau in the driver's seat and leading the way towards positive outcomes for their whānau. Our team walk alongside whānau to navigate pathways in areas such as health, education, housing, employment, improved standards of living and cultural connections.

About the role:

The key to Whānau Ora is an inclusive approach that embeds the organisations Kaupapa Ake principles of practice and values. This role primarily focuses on the strengths and capability of the whānau, growing whānau connections, supporting the development of whānau leadership and enhancing best outcomes for whānau.  This role has a strong focus and drive in supporting Rangatahi and their whānau, as they navigate adolescence and their involvement in the Youth Justice System and other relevant agencies.

The Youth Justice Mentor role will assist and empower Rangatahi and whānau to reach their own goals and aspirations through:

  • Advocacy, brokerage, coaching and assisting Rangatahi to enhance and develop their own skills and knowledge to build on their strengths and confidence.
  • Connecting whānau with services that will assist them to reach their goals and aspirations.
  • Guiding rangatahi and whānau through the processes of the Youth Court and other related agencies.
  • Work to the heights of their abilities in order to provide a professional and effective service to whānau.

About you

The perfect candidate will have:

  • A commitment to ensuring best practice when working with rangatahi and whānau
  • An understanding of the Oranga Tamariki Act and how this relates to youth offending/processes
  • A working knowledge of Collective Impact and the Youth Justice System
  • An understanding of the Youth Justice System
  • A passion for delivering high quality experiences for whānau and kaimahi
  • Great communication, advocacy, and relationship-building skills.
  • The ability to demonstrate a commitment to upholding the mana and aspirations of whānau through Whānau Ora principles.
  • The Ability to grow and nurture healthy relationships with Rangatahi
