Manager – Policy and Strategic Support

Te Kaunihera Rata o Aotearoa | Medical Council of New Zealand (the Council) is the regulator for doctors.  Our vision is to have a medical profession all New Zealanders can trust. We protect and promote public health and safety in New Zealand by registering doctors to practise medicine in New Zealand and supporting doctors to practise medicine safely by setting standards, ensuring compliance with those standards, and taking action where concerns are raised about a doctor's practice or conduct.

We are seeking an experienced people leader to manage our Policy and Strategic Support team and play a key role in shaping Council's strategic and policy work.

You will be an engaging, confident people leader who can guide a skilled advisory and project management team. You thrive in complex environments, and can translate regulatory or strategic intent into workable policy and legislative solutions.

To be successful you will bring:

  • A relevant tertiary qualification (minimum bachelor's degree)
  • 7+ years' experience in policy, strategy, research or related advisory roles
  • Hands-on management experience with proven capability leading high-performing teams
  • Strong understanding of policy development, ethics, implementation and impact analysis
  • Experience working with legislation or legal drafting processes
  • Ability to work collaboratively with senior leaders and stakeholders to supporting executive-level decision making
  • Understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, tikanga, cultural safety and te ao Māori perspectives
  • Excellent communication skills—verbal, written, and presentation
  • Sound judgement and a track record of handling sensitive or high-profile work.

Highly advantageous

  • Experience managing public or sector consultation processes
  • Knowledge of regulatory systems or the health sector
