Te Aro, New Zealand Te Aro Law Full time

We are looking for a new Kaiwhakahaere (Practice Manager) to work alongside our current Kaiwhakahaere to support our Tumuaki (Directors) in leading our community law practice. Could this be you?

Are you a motivated experienced administrator looking for a supportive team environment? Do you enjoy working with clients and collaborating with colleagues to contribute to an essential community service?

Background

Te Aro Law is a small litigation firm in the heart of Te Whanganui-a-Tara, established in 2019.

We provide high-quality and cost-effective legal help in family, criminal and civil disputes (including Waitangi Tribunal), and Legal Aid in all areas. Our style of litigation emphasises mutual respect, reasonableness, and care.

We are splitting our current Kaiwhakahaere role into two distinct but equally important roles. This role will take the lead managing our client care and ensuring we have a warm welcoming environment and well-functioning office.

We are looking for applicants who:

  • Are passionate about justice and social justice issues.
  • Have a good understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and (if Pākehā), Pākehā partnership commitments.
  • Are willing to work with a range of clients from different backgrounds and display empathy and open-mindedness in this work.
  • Have experience working in teams and a desire to foster a collaborative and connected work environment.
  • Have worked in small business and/or community-facing services before.
  • Are keen and able to work independently.

Applicants that have less experience in one or more of the above are still encouraged to apply, as long as they are willing and able to learn. We are most interested in your core values, transferable skills, and aptitude.

About us

At Te Aro Law we try to serve some of the most vulnerable in our community while maintaining a supportive work environment and a healthy work life balance. To our team we provide a unique work environment that values flexibility, transparency, and support.

Currently our firm is made up of ten Rōia and one Kaiwhakahaere. Five of our team are parents, including our three Tumuaki.

At Te Aro Law we offer:

  • A collaborative working environment including weekly team meetings.
  • Flexibility that recognises we have lives outside of work.
  • Monthly wellness allowance, support for CPD and professional external supervision when needed.

Pay and working arrangements

All finances, including pay, are transparent within the team at Te Aro Law.

This is an office-based part-time role for four hours per day, four days per week – sixteen hours in total per work week. We do have some flexibility about regular days/hours and are happy to discuss what would work best for you.

For a sixteen-hour work week, the Kaiwhakahaere is paid a gross salary (including the employer Kiwisaver contribution) of:

  • Year one $33,280.00
  • Year two $37,440.00
  • Year three +  $41,600.00

Applications

We are very happy to discuss the role and answer any questions you have. Please contact Kara on or who will respond in the week starting 12 January 2026 (when our office reopens after the Christmas break).

Please include a cover letter and CV in your application, due to by 5pm Tuesday 20th January 2026.
