The Role

Our school operates two daily school van pick up and drop off services, one servicing the Selwyn area and the other north of the Waimakariri River.

We have a vacancy for a driver for our northern daily run.  We are also in need of a relief driver, able to cover for either run if needed.

The permanent role involves a morning run between 6.30 and 8.00am, and an afternoon run starting at 3.30pm.  The run involves collecting or dropping off students at pre-arranged points along the route, either from or into the care of parents or caregivers.  It is not a door to door service.

These positions report to our Business Manager and would suit someone looking for only part time work, or a retired person, who wants to make a difference in the lives of young people.

The Candidate

Our van drivers are trusted with ensuring the safety of our students, who are at the heart of our school.  Our drivers must be comfortable around children and enjoy communicating with children in a warm and friendly manner.

Our drivers are in frequent communication, including out of normal hours, with parents and caregivers over absences or other changes to pick ups and drop offs, requiring prompt and clear communication.  Excellent communication skills and the ability to interact well with staff, students, and parents with warmth and professionalism are imperative.

Due to the nature of the role with frequent changes in passengers sometimes requiring changes to routes, our drivers need to be adaptable with the ability to plan ahead.  Candidates must be careful and considerate drivers, as they will be taking care of our students and representing our school.

Essential Requirements

  • Must hold a full, clean New Zealand Class 1 (car) driver's licence for a minimum of 5 years.
  • Hold a current First Aid Certificate, or agree to complete the required training within the first three months of employment.
  • Ability to successfully undergo Police Vetting (in line with the Vulnerable Children Act).
  • Provide a satisfactory pre-employment medical certificate, at our expense.

Desirable Certifications

  • A current 'P' (Passenger) endorsement.
  • Completion of a recognised defensive or advanced driving course.
