The University of Otago's Centre for Rural Health aims to improve healthcare and health outcomes for rural and remote communities in New Zealand and the wider South Pacific through teaching and research excellence based on the principles of social accountability and community engagement.

The Faculty of Medicine's Rural Medical Immersion Programme (RMIP) for fifth-year medical students was established in 2007 and is currently delivered from nine sites across the South and lower North Islands by a closeknit and enthusiastic team of academic and non-academic teaching staff working in rural clinical practice.

The role | Te mahi

We are seeking to appoint a Regional Coordinator (Senior Professional Practice Fellow) within RMIP. The position will be based in Queenstown and will be of interest to a doctor already working in general and/or hospital practice in the Queenstown-Lakes area.

The Regional Coordinator will continue to develop and deliver the local programme for the cohort of RMIP students (currently four) based in the area for their academic year (February-October).

Duties for the role include:

  • Developing the local programme with local healthcare providers and administrator support
  • Organising the students' local programme attachments
  • Delivering tutorials and marking quarterly assessments
  • Providing pastoral support for students
  • Attending bimonthly online meetings and one face-to-face meeting each year
  • Contributing teaching to the wider programme

The ideal candidate for this position would:

  • Be medically qualified, with current or planned vocational registration in general practice and/or rural hospital medicine
  • Be experienced in rural clinical practice
  • Have current or prior experience living and working in a rural community
  • Have interest/experience in the teaching and learning of undergraduate students
  • Be committed to the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and to equal opportunity

This is a permanent, part-time (0.3 FTE) position available from January 2026. There is the opportunity for the role to be shared among two or more people.

Appointment will be at appropriate step dependent on academic achievement, skills and experience. The salary scale is for a Senior Professional Practice Fellow Level 4 ($148,414 to $184,993 pro-rata per annum).
