Clerk of Committee
When you work in Parliament, you don't just watch democracy in action – you are part of it. And in the Office of the Clerk we work at its core, providing advisory services to the House of Representatives, directly assisting the House and its committees with the business of Parliament.
Te tīma | The team:
Office of the Clerk provides a unique and stimulating work environment where you will be a part of a highly respected organisation that is at the heart of New Zealand's democracy. Select Committee Services supports select committees with the administrative, procedural, and reporting back aspects of their work.
Mō te tūnga | About the role:
As Clerk of Committee, you'll play a lead role in overseeing services to one or more designated select committees. As well as attending all meetings and coordinating the committee's programme of work, you'll work closely with Members of Parliament, providing advice on matters to do with committee procedure, scrutiny of legislation and scrutiny of State Sector agencies.
This is a full time, fixed term role until June 2026.
Ngā haepapa | Responsibilities:
Working for Parliament in a totally impartial, politically neutral environment, your organisational, planning, relationship management and communication skills will be invaluable as you:
- Brief committee chairpersons
- Lead a small secretariat team
- Liaise with departmental advisers and parliamentary counsel
- Coordinate a select committee's programme of work
- Provide advice on parliamentary procedures.
Tō kete | What you will bring to the role:
You'll be building a strong professional relationship with the Chairperson of your committee, so you need to be tactful, diplomatic, and confident working with senior public figures. You'll also need the skills to work with different personalities, and be able to think on your feet, cope with pressure, and deal effectively with the unexpected.
Alongside a tertiary qualification, you'll be confident in leading a small team and advising decision makers and stakeholders. Ensuring correct procedures are followed is a critical part of this role so you'll need to be someone who appreciates the need for rules and processes. But this role isn't just about following a set of rules - you'll also need sound judgement and decision-making skills for situations when the way forward isn't clear-cut.
