Based in the heart of Southland, our Invercargill team are looking to recruit a LLB NZ qualified Lawyer with experience in Family and Criminal Law to fill a locum position, commencing mid-January 2026 for a minimum 6-month period.

The role:

  • Provide expert legal advice and representation on a broad range of family law matters including, but not limited to, divorce/separation, child custody, guardianship disputes, adoption, and property settlements.
  • Advocate for clients in Family Court, mediation, and other dispute resolution processes.
  • Draft legal documents including affidavits, applications, submissions, and court pleadings.
  • Manage a diverse caseload while maintaining strong client relationships and ensuring timely communication and updates.
  • Appear and represent clients in criminal matters at District Court including but not limited to, traffic offences, drug related offending and dishonesty.
  • Collaborate with the team to deliver seamless legal services.
  • Providing counsel across a broad range of Family / Criminal clients including legal aid support and representation (PAL1/PAL2 certification will be essential)

About you:

  • Minimum 3+ years PQE.
  • Strong legal acumen, coupled with exceptional strategic, analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • A self-driven and positive, proactive mindset, coupled with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively within the team.
  • Community-minded.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to empathise with clients during challenging situations.
  • Strong negotiation and advocacy skills, with a proven track record of achieving favourable outcomes for clients.
