Mō te Tūranga | About the Role

The Health Care Assistant is a critical member of the operating theatre team.

In this role you will assist with delegated clinical duties, and housekeeping duties to enhance the experience of the patient within the designated area.

This role is not responsible for decision making regarding patient care or planning, you are responsible to provide optimum care under the direction and supervision of Registered Nurses, and Anaesthetic Technicians.

Responsibilities:

  • Assisting in setting up theatres and preparing the theatre and patient for surgery.
  • Supporting the clinical staff during treatments, investigations, and procedures.
  • Participating as a member of the circulation team.
  • Transporting and escorting patients between wards, theatre, and other departments.
  • Ensuring instruments are prepared and ready before procedures.
  • Assisting with the cleanliness and maintenance of the theatres.
  • Stock checking and stocking theatres appropriately.

  • Excellent time management and organisation skills
  • Excellent communication skills with a high standard of written and literacy skills
  • New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing (Level 3) is desirable, however there is opportunity for you train on the job.
  • HCA Level 3 Certificate and/or completed Level 2 NCEA / 6th Form Certificate
  • Assists with set up and close of a theatre in preparation.
  • Assists with cleaning and turnover between each procedure.
  • Sources equipment required for the specific operating room e.g. positioning gear.
  • Restocks sundries and required items within the operating room.
  • Understands and demonstrates operating room principles for sterile fields and sterile items.
  • Participates in data for auditing collection under direction and supervision of Registered/EN Nurse
  • Understands hazardous items and health and safety requirements within the workplace.
  • Sets up procedure cases for the next day using surgeons' preference sheets.
  • Understands their role in clinical emergencies.
  • Maintains tidy and well stocked linen room.
  • Completes weekly cleaning of and date checking of sundries and cupboards.
  • Has an understanding about use of emergency equipment and when it would be needed?
