Immediate Contract Opportunity – SAS Mainframe Architect/ BA (Wellington, NZ)

A new contract engagement has opened for a senior SAS Mainframe Architect to support a major transformation program within the banking domain. This role is critical for establishing technical capability in the New Zealand location and requires someone available to join immediately or within one week.

Role Overview

The position involves working with large and complex SAS workloads on mainframe environments, analysing existing processes, and shaping the direction for modernisation and cloud migration. The architect will guide technical decisions, streamline legacy jobs, and help transition traditional SAS pipelines into contemporary data platforms.

Key Responsibilities

  • Analyse, interpret, and document SAS codebases operating on z/OS.
  • Optimise and standardise SAS jobs for improved performance and maintainability.
  • Design architectural patterns to transition SAS workloads into modern cloud ecosystems.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams to convert batch-driven SAS processes into cloud-native ELT/ETL workflows.
  • Ensure smooth interoperability with mainframe technologies including COBOL, JCL, DB2, and VSAM.
  • Provide technical leadership across modernisation initiatives and support cross-functional teams.

Desired Background

  • Strong expertise in SAS Base, SAS Macros, PROC development, and SAS SQL.
  • Hands-on experience managing and debugging SAS jobs on mainframe (z/OS).
  • Proven understanding of JCL, COBOL integration points, and mainframe utilities.
  • Background in large-scale SAS transformation or cloud migration projects.
  • Exposure to modern data platforms such as Snowflake, Databricks, or SAS Viya.
  • Excellent analytical ability, communication skills, and stakeholder engagement experience.
