Carpenter

The Whakapapa whānau are a small but ambitious team, running year-round operations on the northern slopes of Mt Ruapehu. In winter, from June until October, this includes a world-class ski area. In summer, from December until April, this includes our summer sightseeing operation, heroing our iconic Sky Waka gondola. Each year we welcome hundreds of thousands of manuhiri (guests) to Whakapapa, many with life-long connections to the maunga (mountain) and surrounding region, some even third or fourth generation.

Mō te tūnga | About the role

Join our team at Whakapapa and help keep the maunga running smoothly We're looking for a skilled Carpenter to maintain and repair ski area structures and facilities — ensuring everything from lift stations to mountain huts operates safely and reliably for our team and guests. Your work will help ensure our facilities are available, functional, and meet high safety standards across the ski area.

Your day-to-day will include:

• Performing maintenance, installation, testing, and troubleshooting of ski area structures in line with legislation and best practice.
• Carrying out regular scheduled maintenance of ski area buildings, chairlift and surface lift cabins, and related facilities.
• Completing repairs, modifications, and upgrades with a focus on safety and operational efficiency.
• Ensuring all work is completed to a high standard, on time, and compliant with safety requirements.
• Conducting regular system and safety checks to maintain operational functionality.
• Assisting with storm or weather-related repairs, lift de-icing, and other tasks involving work at heights as needed.

• Trade qualification or proven experience in carpentry or building maintenance.
• Strong focus on safety and practical problem-solving.
• Ability to work in challenging weather and environmental conditions, with good physical and mental endurance
• Flexibility to support operational needs during weather events or peak periods.
