We're on a mission to transform and modernise our digital capabilities. In this role, you'll join Kiwibank's Digital & Technology team, working in our API Management space. As a Senior Engineer, you'll contribute to building and maintaining scalable, secure, performant, and growing API platforms that support our digital products and services.

You'll work closely with cross-functional teams to deliver solutions that meet business needs, improve developer experience, and enable seamless integration across systems.

What you'll be doing day-to-day:

  • Designing, building, and maintaining API platforms and services
  • Collaborating with product owners, architects, and developers to deliver high-quality solutions
  • Ensuring APIs are secure, standardised, scalable, and well-documented
  • Supporting integration efforts across internal and external systems
  • Contributing to continuous improvement and automation initiatives
  • Collaborating with Kiwibank's engineering community to maintain API best practices
  • Mentoring junior engineers and contributing to strategic technical decisions

Key skills and experience we're looking for:

  • Strong experience in API design and development (5+ years commercial experience minimum)
  • Knowledge of API gateways, security protocols, and integration patterns
  • Experience with cloud platforms and CI/CD pipelines
  • Ability to work collaboratively in agile teams
  • Strong problem-solving and communication skills
  • Familiarity with microservices architecture and containerisation platforms like Kubernetes
  • Experience with IaC (Terraform)
  • Experience leading technical initiatives or mentoring others

Bonus:

  • Experience with tools like Apigee, Kong, AWS API Gateway, or Azure API Management
  • Familiarity with multiple API patterns like REST and GraphQL
