Support an autistic teenager and become a trusted ally to his family.

Location: Wellington (Vogeltown/Brooklyn area)

Hours: Sundays 10am – 2pm (during school terms) + occasional casual hours (school holidays or evenings)

Pay rate: $28 – $32 per hour (depending on experience)

Type: Permanent Part-time


About the Role

A bright, funny 15-year-old young man with autism is looking for a genuine and committed person to spend time with on weekends. He communicates via spelled communication and needs a buddy and communication partner who can learn his unique way of interacting and help him get the most out of his day.

He loves nature walks, museums, the library, and learning about history and Te Ao Māori. You'll spend time out and about together, sharing his humour, curiosity, and enthusiasm for learning.

This is not a typical support worker position — it's about building a trusting, long-term relationship

and doing life together.


What You'll Be Doing

  • Spending time together on Sundays doing enjoyable and meaningful activities.
  • Supporting communication through spelled communication (training provided).
  • Providing gentle guidance, reassurance, and support during challenging moments.
  • Assisting with personal cares (e.g. toileting support and hygiene).
  • Maintaining a calm, respectful and positive attitude, even in tricky situations.
  • Being a steady, confident presence and a true ally to both him and his family.

About You

You are:

  • Available to work Sundays.
  • Genuine and grounded, with a warm and positive attitude.
  • Physically fit and emotionally resilient — able to remain calm and composed when things get tough.
  • Willing to learn and open to new ways of communicating.
  • Respectful and empathetic, always presuming competence and seeing himas an intelligent young man.
  • Reliable and committed — looking for a stable, long-term role.
  • Able to take initiative and lead confidently when needed.

Given the physical nature of the role, we are seeking a person who is strong and robust in body, mind, and spirit.
