BreastScreen Midland, Health New Zealand Te Whatu Ora, is looking for an exceptional senior Health Promoter to raise awareness of, and participation in, the free national breast screening programme in our region (Waikato, Bay of Plenty and Lakes districts), prioritising engagement with Māori and Pacific communities.

You will play a crucial role in planning and coordinating engagement initiatives and education sessions. Combining your established community networks and ability to engage with our eligible age group years), you will make a genuine difference and improve outcomes for whānau and `aiga.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement ideas and promotional activities to increase the participation of eligible women, particularly for Māori & Pacific people who live across our region.
  • Attend events and workshops on marae, in community settings or within workplaces to encourage and inspire a proactive approach to hauora screening practices, principally to understand the benefits of screening for breast cancer and to participate in the free programme.
  • Proactively seek out opportunities to promote breast screening by working collaboratively with other screening services, diverse community organisations, health providers and workplaces.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of a communication and social media plan in alignment with key targets and strategies for breast screening.
  • Maintain strong and effective relationships in communities across the region including, but not limited to, hauora, iwi and Pacific trusts, community services, councils and local media.

About the Team/Service

Breast Screen Aotearoa (BSA) is a breast cancer screening programme providing mammograms every two years for eligible women aged 45-69 years. We have recently rolled out age extension to those eligible up-to 74.There are eight providers covering New Zealand, of which Breast Screen Midland is one. Breast Screen Midland (BSM) covers the geographic boundaries of the Waikato, Bay of Plenty and Lakes District regions. BSM currently offers this service from eight fixed sites across the region and is supported by two mobiles that travel around the region providing accessibility for rural women (soon to be a fleet of four mobiles)

About you

To be a successful applicant, you would ideally have the following:

  • Have established community networks and engagement experience with Māori and / or Pacific communities.
  • Background in health promotion and / or education and have worked in a health setting for more than 4 years.
  • Demonstrated experience in proactively developing engagement ideas and delivering on innovative solutions.
  • Full New Zealand Drivers License.
  • Proven excellent written and verbal communication skills.

In addition, the following qualities would be desirable:

  • Under-graduate education in a health care profession.
  • Communications, design or social media experience.
