About the role
- To provide a professional, efficient, and complex facial comparison examination provision to the New Zealand Police Service, and external agencies, with the appropriate vetting level.
- To ensure the quality standards are satisfied.
- To provide an accurate technical facial comparison examination.
- To assist Reporting Facial Examiners in delivering the highest level of facial comparison expertise to support investigations.

**Key Accountabilities**:
The Assistant Facial Examiner (Assistant) will have successfully completed the appropriate facial identification examiner training courses. The role holder must have a working knowledge of facial anatomy, image analysis and the comparison of facial images, and have an awareness of all disciplines within the Directorate of Forensic Services. The Assistant must operate with a thorough knowledge any computerised systems required for efficient service delivery.

The individual will demonstrate continual competence in all key technical activities, through competency and proficiency testing programmes. The individual is expected to attend available courses in addition to taking responsibility for their own continuing professional development.

The individual will be highly self-motivated with excellent communication skills (written and oral) and have the ability to work effectively, under pressure. The Assistant must be able to articulate their findings to fellow practitioners and non-practitioners.

Key activities
- The Assistant will assist in delivery of the facial comparison service to investigation. They will manage their casework in accordance with service level agreements and operational demands.
- Use training and experience to analyse and compare facial images. Use professional judgment to determine the quality of an image and the most effective method of processing case material to support an investigation. Provide accurate and detailed notes describing observations of image analysis and facial comparison. Provide and articulate a rationale for personal opinions.
- The Assistant will be responsible, under instruction,for the preparation and examination of facial images for evidential requests.
- To work within the Quality Management System and actively participate in the continuous improvement of the system by engaging in audits, competence tests, reporting non-conformances, etc and suggesting changes to improve the system.

- Tertiary Qualification will be advantageous
