We are looking for a Press Secretary or Senior Press Secretary for the office of Hon. Michael Wood
- Do you have a background in journalism or communications?
- Be part of a Government that is putting New Zealander's first
- Fast paced and ever-changing environment
Working on the Parliamentary precinct is a unique opportunity to be at the heart of policy decision making affecting all New Zealanders where communicating the Government's future direction is both exciting and rewarding.
Hon. Michael Wood, Minister of Immigration, Minister of Transport, Minister for Workplace Relations and Safety, Minister for Auckland, as well as the Associate Minister of Finance is seeking a high performer who is ready for a fast-paced, exciting, and stimulating role. Based in his ministerial office, you will work closely with the Minister and his team to ensure communications are aligned to policy and decision-making of the Executive Government.
As one of two press secretaries you will need to collaboratively as well as independently to deliver results under tight deadlines. You will advise the Minister on media and strategic issues on both the day-to-day communications and the long-term political strategy. The nature of this position requires you to both plan and prepare a story before it happens as well as create the narrative.
A typical day will be spent planning announcements, supplying information to key stakeholders, writing media releases, op-eds and speeches, building relationships with media, creating content for social media and arranging media interviews. Travelling with the Minister to public engagements will ensure the Minister is well prepared and supported for all eventualities.
With a significant background in media, communications and/or public relations combined with a strong understanding of issues and initiatives of importance to the Minister and associated responsibilities delegated to them by the Prime Minister, you will be an integral part of the Minister's team. Supporting the wider team is crucial in ensuring communications are clear, informative and timely. If you are comfortable working in an environment where no two days are the same, and you have the ability to adapt to new situations, learning information as you go, this role may be just the next career move you are looking for.
Experience or interest in the Minister's portfolios is beneficial, but not necessary.
The position will require you to move seamlessly through a range of complex material, where an eye for detail and the ability to communicate complex ideas to a variety of audiences, through a number of channels is critical to success. Having a highly attuned awareness of the current media and political landscape, you will be in a good position to keep the Minister and wider team aware of potential risks. You will be someone who is focused on interacting in a collegial way with members of the Minister's team, others on the precinct, and a number of key stakeholders.
The Department of Internal Affairs may appoint at a senior level if you have the required skills and experience for the role.
The Department of Internal Affairs is committed to the professional development of its employees, offering a number of in-house and self-paced online learning opportunities.
