Wellington City, New Zealand New Zealand Government Full time

Who we are
The Parliamentary Counsel Office (PCO) is New Zealand's law drafting and publication office, and the Government's legislative adviser. Its statutory objective is to promote high-quality legislation that is easy to find, use, and understand and, to that end, to exercise stewardship of New Zealand's legislation as a whole.
What we are looking for
We are looking for two motivated and experienced team players to join our Editorial Services team as editors on a permanent basis. We have one full-time position and one part-time position (30 hours per week) to fill.
Our Editorial Services team
Our Editorial Services team is part of our Access and Digital Services group, which provides free and ready access for users to up-to-date, high-quality legislation through the New Zealand Legislation website. The team provides a specialist editorial service to Parliamentary Counsel (legislative drafters) throughout the drafting process.
Editors read and provide editorial suggestions for draft versions of Bills, Supplementary Order Papers, and secondary legislation to ensure that the drafts follow style and formatting rules and are clear, accurate, and consistent. They also check that draft amendments fit correctly with the existing legislation being amended. Editors sometimes also edit non-legislative documents.
Our editors have the opportunity for career progression within the team.
About you
To be considered for the role of editor in our Editorial Services team, ideally you would have:

- demonstrated ability to deliver editorial services, including by analysing language structures and format, and through fact-checking:

- knowledge of editorial practices, standards, and systems:

- excellent written English skills and a good grasp of grammar:

- an appreciation of the principles of plain language:

- the ability to consistently maintain a high standard of work under strict deadlines:

- proven experience of working in a team as a positive, constructive, and contributing team player:

- strong communication and relationship management skills:

- commitment to building knowledge, skills, and abilities in te reo Māori me ngā tikanga:

- a tertiary qualification, or equivalent experience, in publishing or editing, or in another relevant field.

An understanding of legislation and legislative processes and concepts, the New Zealand political system, and parliamentary processes would be an advantage. If you do not have previous experience working with legislation, you must be able to quickly acquire knowledge and understanding to the level needed to carry out the editor role.
Our culture
Our whakatauākī is a guiding principle that helps to ensure that our actions and decisions align with our values:
Mā te whakamana tāngata, me te mahi ngātahi, ka whai putanga tatou. Through valuing people and collaborating, we can achieve great outcomes.
- We're collaborative and friendly and share a vision to make great law for New Zealand.
- We're committed to our people's well-being, providing support and opportunities for you to thrive.
- Our environment is inclusive—we believe that you should bring your authentic self to work.

Salary and benefits
The current salary band for the editor role is $64,350 to $78,650 per annum (full-time). The band is reviewed annually as part of the PCO's remuneration review. Our benefits include five weeks' annual leave, a vision subsidy, an exercise subsidy, in-house te reo classes, and more.
How to apply
This is an excellent opportunity to join a professional and highly respected organisation.
Applications close on Monday, 11 September at 5 pm.
