Kōrero mō te Tūranga - About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Manager to lead our Aquaculture Settlement team which sits within Fisheries New Zealand. This team is responsible for facilitating sustainable and resilient aquaculture development through implementing and delivering the Māori commercial aquaculture settlement and for supporting improvements to the regulatory controls on aquaculture activities that promote sector sustainability and resilience.
These are critical functions to guide sustainable growth of aquaculture in New Zealand. In this role, you will be a leader within a Directorate of people passionate and committed to making aquaculture a much bigger part of our economy, growing in a way that prioritises positive environmental outcomes, working with people, and reducing waste and emissions.

Mōu - About You
As a people leader, you will bring experience in managing high performing teams preferably with a focus on delivering positive outcomes for Māori.
You will be capable of leading the development and delivery of settlement agreements with iwi, managing relationships with a variety of stakeholders and understand how to enable and support sustainable sector growth.
To be successful in this role, you will be able to demonstrate:
- Experience in working with Māori to deliver on Crown obligations
- Proven ability to build a collaborative team culture and foster a high performing team environment
- Proven ability to thrive in a rapidly evolving operating environment
- Experience in navigating the machinery of government and understanding of regulatory best practice
- Financial planning and budget management
- Project or programme management skills
- A tertiary qualification in economics, law, resource management, agricultural, forestry, fisheries, horticultural or biological sciences, or a related discipline, or equivalent work experience at a senior management level
Mō tō mātou Rōpū - About the Team
This team is situated across the motu to ensure that the Ministry is effectively serving the communities we work with. Several are in Nelson, including the Director Aquaculture, to whom this position reports. Given the work programme is to deliver aquaculture treaty settlements and grow the aquaculture sector in Aotearoa, you will get to work alongside very passionate people to make collective change.
