**Vacancies on the**Radiation Safety Advisory Council**

**About the role - Korero mo te turanga**

The Council is an advisory group established under section 80 of the Act. Being a member of the Council is rewarding and challenging. You will be committed to protecting the health and safety of New Zealanders and protecting the environment through your contribution to the Council's legislative requirements.

The functions of the Council are set out under section 81 of the Act which are:

- to provide advice to the Director for Radiation Safety (the Director) and the Minister of Health (the Minister) on general matters relating to or affecting radiation safety and standards relating to radiation safety
to advise and make recommendations to
- the Minister on the exercise of the Minister's powers under this Act
- the Director on the adoption of recommendations, policies, codes of practice, and standards relating to radiation safety
- the Director in respect of authorisations referred to it by the Director; and

to provide advice as requested on any matter relating to radiation safety referred to it by the Minister, the Director-General of Health, or the Director.

Appointments to the Council are made by the Minister or their delegate, typically for terms of three years.

**About you - Korero mou**

Under section 80 of the Act, the Council must be made up of members with:

- appropriate knowledge, expertise or interest in radiation and nuclear safety,
- appropriate knowledge and experience in the use of radiation and radiation sources,
and lay members.
- naturally occurring radioactive material, mining, or regulation in this area.
- use of radioactive material or irradiating apparatus in a non-medical setting e.g. Research/teaching, veterinary, engineering or industry.
An understanding of international standards and guidelines in radiation protection particularly those standards established by the International Radiation Protection or the International Atomic Energy Agency.
- an awareness and understanding of a range of cultural perspectives in health care, and their impact on service delivery
knowledge and understanding of relevant legislation.
- there are no conflicts of interest which would preclude their appointment or ability to participate in significant amounts of the Council's business
they are available to serve for the full term of their appointment.

Due diligence checks will be undertaken for shortlisted applicants. Your personal information will be handled in accordance with the Privacy Act 2020. The Ministry may also request that the New Zealand Security Intelligence Service conduct national security screening of you as part of the appointment process.
