Help shape a city that works for everyone The Disability Advisory Panel advises Te Kaunihera o Tāmaki Makaurau | Auckland Council on how to make Tāmaki Makaurau more accessible and inclusive for people with disabilities. It inspires and supports Council to value and utilise the expertise and leadership of disabled people with a vision to embed disability-impact thinking and universal design across the city as business as usual.

As a panel member you'll provide advice to the decision-makers on:

  • Regional strategies, plans and key policies

  • Strategic matters affecting Auckland

  • Issues of particular interest or concern to diverse communities

Your contribution will help ensure Auckland's policies and plans reflect the diversity of our city and support all communities to thrive.

Advisory Panels

Advisory Panels are one way Auckland Council engages meaningfully with diverse communities. We know that involving Aucklanders with different experiences, backgrounds and perspectives is vital to the region's success.

These panels offer a space where your insights, experiences, and ideas can help shape the future of Tāmaki Makaurau.

The demographic panels meet approximately every six-eight weeks, with each meeting lasting three hours. You'll also be invited to attend additional cross-panel workshops and activities. On average, panel members spend around 10–15 hours per month on panel-related work, including preparation for meetings, pre-reading of draft policies and plans, and giving feedback.

He kōrero mōu: About you

You're passionate about contributing to the future of Tāmaki Makaurau and supporting positive outcomes for our communities.

In this role, you'll bring lived experience of your communities with an understanding of diverse perspective. You will be collaborating with others and sharing your experiences and perspectives to help advise Council.

Ideally, you will:

  • Be actively involved in your community or sector, with a strong understanding of its issues, aspirations, and challenges;

  • Bring thoughtful and strategic insights to panel conversations;

  • Work well with people from diverse backgrounds;

  • Engage and give advice confidently to a range of stakeholders and contribute to group discussions;

  • Understand Te Tiriti o Waitangi / the Treaty of Waitangi – we especially welcome applicants with lived experience of Te ao Māori; and

  • Have experience interpreting policy, project plans, or strategies, preferred but not essential

You'll need to commit to a three-year term and be available for scheduled panel meetings and workshops (held on weekdays and/or evenings).

Panel members are paid meeting fees and reimbursed for travel expenses as per the Auckland Council Fees Framework and Expenses Policy for Appointed Members.
