**What you’ll do**:

- Lead the regulatory advisory function at Xero. Privacy regulatory advisory will be provided by the GM-Global Privacy, with the two roles acting in close collaboration.
- In coordination with the global privacy and compliance teams, ensure a proactive approach is taken to identification and management of all regulatory risk and potential impacts to Xero across the global business.
- Provide proactive legal advice and prepare internal policies incorporating regulatory advice enabling a “baseline” position to be taken for each regulatory risk, and ensuring that regulatory advice supports the strategic vision for Xero’s current and new product offering.
- Keep abreast of changes to law globally within the role’s purview and proactively inform the Chief Legal Officer and relevant EGMs and legal team members of relevant matters, particularly where projects and resources will be required to implement legislative requirements.
- Coordinate with applicable business units and key stakeholders across the globe, including the financial services function.
- Manage and lead the development and delivery of training and the promotion of awareness around regulatory issues while supporting Xero to continue delivering enhanced customer benefit.
- Be the primary point of contact for Xero for regulatory authorities worldwide (excluding data protection authorities), working with local in-house counsel and external advisors where appropriate.
- Working closely with the CLO and Company Secretary, report as required to the Xero Board and/or XLT on regulatory risks, issues, or updates.
- Be responsible for legal input into the development, maintenance and update of appropriate regulatory related policies, procedures and supporting documentation, working with stakeholders to ensure policies reflect the requirements of global regulations and Xero’s other commitments.
- Support other members of the legal team on contract development, drafting and negotiation as required as those relate to regulatory issues, especially for financial services products and services.
- Lead Xero’s response to regulatory enquiries, including responding to statutory requests for documentation and information.
- In conjunction with the government relations team, support or lead Xero’s response to external regulatory advocacy and regulatory policy matters, including advocating with government bodies for change and manage submissions on proposed changes to the law relevant to Xero’s business
- Coach and lead your regulatory legal team to be a high performing, highly engaged and cohesive function.
- Effectively manage resources within the regulatory team to ensure adequate support to the business as well as continued development and job satisfaction for regulatory team members.
- Work with the legal compliance team and other compliance stakeholders to support compliance across Xero.
- Advise senior management on key regulatory issues.
- Lead regulatory related matters as part of M&A activity.
- Liaise with and manage Xero’s external regulatory legal advisors as required, including managing budget/fees.

**What you’ll bring with you**:

- 10+ years PQE
- Extensive experience advising global, growth focussed businesses (ideally with a technology focus)
- Experience with dealing with regulatory bodies on both proactive lobbying and in confident management of regulators
- Significant experience in legal risk management
- Relevant law degree
- Current practising certificate in Australia/NZ/US (desirable)
- Experience in, or qualifications in, financial services regulation (desirable)
- Knowledge of AML/CTF compliance obligations (desirable)
- Strong drafting, analytical, and interpretation skills
- Strong commercial acumen and a pragmatic approach
- Practical and proactive problem solving skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- High level of attention to detail
- Ability to work autonomously
- Ability to take a proactive and creative approach to managing/solving regulatory issues
- Collaborative, growth and innovation mindset
- Ability to convey complex regulatory matters in a digestible, plain-english format
