**He angitūtanga**: The opportunity
There are significant inequities in lung cancer with Māori experiencing higher rates of lung Cancer and higher mortality compared to the non-Māori population. Internationally lung cancer screening has been shown to reduce inequities in lung cancer mortality because it detects lung cancer early, before it has caused any symptoms, when the opportunity for curative treatment is highest. Auckland and Waitematā DHBs have a programme of research focused on lung cancer screening.
The overall aim of the programme is
To enhance hauora Māori outcomes and experience by implementing Pae Ora. As part of this programme we are undertaking a trial of lung cancer screening with Māori participants. The successful applicant will join our team of study nurses, playing a key role in undertaking the lung cancer screening trial, specifically helping us to role out a COPD assessment as part of this study. This research is with Māori who are enrolled in primary care practices within the Auckland and Waitematā DHBs.
**The role will include**:
- Active engagement with Māori patients and whanau including conducting risk assessment and taking them through the informed consent process.
- Conducting Spirometry with participants that consent to undergo these assessments.
- Data collection in both a centralized hub and in outpatient clinic settings.
**Ngā He korero mōu**: What we are looking for
- A nurse with experience in working with patients within respiratory care, oncology or primary care, and with experience of engaging effectively with Māori patients and whānau.
- A nurse with experience of conducting spirometry assessment
- A professional with passion in or interest in developing research nurse expertise.
- A strong commitment to equity and the advancement of Māori health.
- Strong teamwork reputation, confident decision making and advocacy for Māori patient and whānau needs.
