**About the Role**
We are seeking a Medical Registrar Advanced Trainee in Respiratory looking to further your training by joining our Medical Department at Hawke's Bay Fallen Soldiers Memorial Hospital. The 2026 placements are 2 February and/or 3 August.
The Respiratory & Sleep Department is a thriving regional service encompassing most facets of respiratory medicine. The Advanced Trainee position is accredited for 12 months of core respiratory training and is supported by with 7 permanent Respiratory Physicians, ensuring continuous specialist supervision and diverse training opportunities.
Services include regular bronchoscopy lists, a busy pleural service, and outpatient care spanning respiratory and sleep medicine. Opportunities abound in areas such as obstructive airways disease, lung cancer, interstitial lung disease, bronchiectasis, cystic fibrosis, TB, and complex lung diseases. We offer a comprehensive local education program, participate in tertiary MDM for ILD and lung cancer, and provide support for ASUM certification in thoracic interventional ultrasound in collaboration with radiology.
Our comprehensive pulmonary function lab includes CPET with two experienced physiologists linking in to tertiary physiology teaching sessions weekly; provision of ambulatory sleep services; teaching of RMOs, nurses and allied health; developing models of care and liaison with community based support services. The trainee has the opportunity to perform bronchoscopies, participate in pleural procedures, engage in lab activity, manage acute admissions to respiratory and specialist outpatient clinics. With no competition from other respiratory trainees, this role offers extensive hands-on experience across clinical, procedural, and educational domains.
As a regional hospital, your afterhours work will be in Acute General Medicine. There is opportunity to extend your training time in Hawke’s Bay by rotating through other accredited medical registrar roles, suitable for both advanced and basic training.
**About the Team/Service/Location**
The wider Medical Department comprises nine ward-based teams and includes 28 dual-trained Internal Medicine Physicians, 24 Registrars, 15 House Officers, and support from Trainee Interns.
We foster a collaborative, supportive and collegial work environment. Our current rotations include Cardiology, Respiratory, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, General Medicine (with Neurology and Older People’s Health), Renal, as well as outpatient-based rotations in Medical Oncology and Haematology.
Hawke’s Bay Hospital is a 400-bed secondary level public hospital in Hastings, serving a population of over 180,000 people. We offer both acute and elective care across a wide range of medical and surgical specialties. We are supported by a strong regional ICU and flight team with tertiary support for cardiac intervention, cardiothoracic surgery, plastics and neurosurgery from Wellington, ensuring comprehensive care for a diverse patient population.

**About you**
- You’re a Resident Medical Officer (RMO) who has completed basic physician training, and passed their FRACP examination (or equivalent qualification)
- You are registered or eligible for general registration, with the Medical Council of New Zealand
