Student - Fish Passage Technician

**We’re looking for someone who**:

- This 6-month position is integral to our regional environmental monitoring efforts and focuses on a pioneering project to pinpoint physical barriers to the migration of native wai māori ika/freshwater fish, such as tuna/eels and galaxiids.

- You have completed or are pursuing a tertiary degree in natural, physical, or environmental sciences, or have relevant field experience.
- You thrive in a small team, enjoy working outdoors, and are committed to the health of our environment.
- You prioritise safety in the outdoors, hold a full driver’s licence, and want to learn how to collect reputable information that is used in research and reporting.
- You have a moderate level of fitness and ability to navigate in steep terrain.
- Basic GIS (Geographic Information Systems) experience is an advantage.

- Join the Ecological Monitoring Team at Waikato Regional Council (WRC) for an exciting fixed-term full-time role across six months from November 2025 until May 2026. While based out of our Hamilton office, you will venture across the diverse landscapes of the Waikato Region. One day you may be surveying culverts in the Coromandel, while the next sees you investigating a weir in the Waipā
- As part of our dynamic team, you will be:
- Collaborating with scientists to pinpoint locations for fish passage assessments using various mapping and GIS software.
- Planning field surveys, including identifying potential access hazards and coordinating access with landowners.
- Engaging in extensive fieldwork, including travelling to remote fish passage sites, with some excursions extending into overnight stays (food and accommodation provided).
- Prioritizing team safety both on
- and off-road while surveying fish passage obstructions and collecting high quality data.
- Managing ecological data using the NIWA Fish Passage Assessment Tool and WRC databases and conducting data analyses.
- Contributing to reports detailing your findings, and recommending structures for remediation.
- Supporting other WRC Environmental Monitoring teams, with opportunities to participate in freshwater fish and invertebrate monitoring, as well as water quality assessments across streams, rivers, and lakes, and other ecological projects.
