**1. GENERAL**

Te Wānanga o Ngā Kete the Division of Arts, Law, Psychology and Social Sciences includes

Te Kura Toi the School of Arts, Te Kura Aronui the School of Social Sciences, and Te Kura

Whatu Oho the School Psychology, and Te Piringa the Faculty of Law. The Division also

contains two research institutes: Te Ngira the Institute for Population Research (IPR) and Te

Puna Haumaru the New Zealand Institute for Security and Crime Science (NZISCS).

The Pro Vice-Chancellor has responsibility for the overall direction of the Division’s activities.

This position is located in the Law offices and forms part of the administrative team of the Pro

Vice-Chancellor of ALPSS Division Office.

**2. POSITION PURPOSE**
To assist in developing a supportive learning environment for Māori students within Te Piringa,

Faculty of Law.

Provide Strategic Advice to the Pro Vice-Chancellor’s Office, Associate Dean Māori and other

Senior Management areas of the Division with regards to strategy in relation to Māori initiatives.

This will be based on the cultural imperatives of whakawhanaungatanga, manaakitanga,

whakawhitiwhakaaro and teina tuakana.

To increase the number of Māori Students through marketing and recruitment initiatives targeting

Māori school leavers, mature applicants and graduate students. A further key priority is to improve

retention and achievement rates for Māori.

To work as an integral member of the Division administration team, providing efficient and

effective support for the core business of teaching and research, including co-ordinating the

Māori mentors in line with the aims and objectives of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Māori) Equity

Mentoring initiative, programme planning and enrolment functions.

**3. ACCOUNTABILITY**

The Māori Liaison Coordinator is responsible to the Division Director.

**5. KEY TASKS**

**5.1 Māori Student Support**
To work with academic and general staff Te Piringa - Faculty of Law in providing a

supportive environment for Māori students in the Division; including:
Develop and coordinate appropriate support systems, including facilitation, monitoring

and developing a mentoring programme for Māori students at undergraduate level and

participate actively for the retention and support of Māori students.Work with Māori students and staff to provide for the welcoming of new Māori students

to Te Piringa - Faculty of Law, according to tikanga Māori and ongoing events that enable

Māori students to develop informal support networks.Recruit, train, employ and supervise appropriate and high achieving senior Māori

students to act as Kaiāwhina for Māori students within the Division in consultation with

the Division Director and Associate Dean Maori.Attend and actively participate/contribute at regular meetings of Te Puna Tautoko and

provide feedback to the Faculty Māori students on the initiatives of Te Puna Tautoko.Liaise with Te Hunga Roia Māori o Aotearoa (Māori Law Society) and the legal

profession generally.Work in collaboration with the Maori Liaison Coordinator for Arts, Psychology and Social

Sciences.Provide study advising for first year Maori students.
- Provide enrolment and programme planning advice to Maori students, encouraging early

enrolment to continuing students and finalising their enrolment for the year.

**5.2** **Strategic Planning

Team including the PVC to assist them to develop a strategic plan to improve successful

completion rates for
