**Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role**

Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington is currently recruiting a Kairuruku - Research Assistant to provide administrative and research support to Dr Rachael Shaw and the wider project team on the “Recognising Taonga with AI: Facial Recognition for Kākā Conservation Management” Kaupapa for a fixed term contract. The Kairuruku - Research Assistant will also work with staff at Zealandia Te Māra a Tāne, Mana Whenua Taranaki Whānaui, Ngāti Toa Rangatira and other Iwi, Te Herenga Waka Marae, community groups, service providers internal and external as required to perform effectively in the position.

Key responsibilities:

- Planning and organising wānanga/workshops/hui/meetings/community events (internal/external) with excellent manaakitanga and whakawhanaungatanga to inform key groups about the research and key milestones throughout the kaupapa.
- Administratively supporting the creation of opportunities for Iwi/Māori to engage with this research. This includes assisting the development of creative/bespoke opportunities for engagement with a capacity-challenged cohort. Manaakitanga and whakawhanaungatanga will be central to these hui.
- Assisting with general administrative support including fieldwork support, data sorting and filing.

**Ō pūmanawa - About you**

You have a genuine interest and knowledge of Te Taiao, particularly manu, and Te Ao Māori, and you are comfortable supporting the integration of mātauranga Māori principles into the work. You are approachable and able to build positive relationships with a wide range of people, including iwi, community groups, and researchers.

Your communication skills, both written and verbal, are strong and clear, and you are not afraid to adapt when plans change. You work well both independently and as part of a team, and you’re not fazed by challenges or busy workloads.

You are highly organised and detail-oriented, with a practical approach to administration and event coordination. You are reliable, proactive, and able to juggle multiple tasks while meeting deadlines.

Key requirements:

- Proven experience in administration, including organising events.
- Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
- A genuine interest in Te Taiao, particularly manu and Te Ao Māori, including mātauranga Māori.
- Clear and effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Flexibility, creativity, and a practical mindset to solve problems as they arise.
- An interest in Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology.

Initial appointment at Step 1 to 5; $56,118 to $62,985 per annum
