At Te Tāhuhu o te Mātauranga | Ministry of Education, we work to provide services and support nationally, regionally and locally to the education sector, and in some cases, directly to ākonga and whānau.
We shape the policies, settings and performance of the education system for early learning, schooling and tertiary.

**Mō tēnei tūranga | About this role**
We have made a commitment to understand and respond to how school and kura activities and Te Tāhuhu o te Mātauranga | Ministry of Education (the Ministry) activity impact our environment.
We have established a sustainability programme for state schools and kura to:
- report emissions annually that result from the functioning of state schools and kura covering activities undertaken by the Ministry and schools and kura;
- establish emission reduction targets alongside and in consultation with, our schools and kura, our teachers and education leaders and our communities including iwi, hapū and whanau;
- develop comprehensive and cost-effective emission reduction interventions, track progress against targets and report back on effectiveness of interventions;
- meet current Carbon Neutral Government Programme requirements.
We are looking for a change champion and inspirational leader with strong commercial acumen and proven experience within a climate change or global regulatory environment. You'll be able to shape and implement practical and relevant emission reduction initiatives and be comfortable working at scale within large, complex public or private organisations. As the conduit across a wide range of stakeholders, you will be competent in facilitating a working environment that cultivates innovation and empowers others.
Key deliverables:
- Build and lead a high performing and collaborative team.
- Develop and implement operational frameworks for emissions inventory, reduction targets and reduction initiatives.
- Identify and evaluate pilot projects or programmes that ensure emission reduction initiatives are optimised for delivery.
- Actively champion the need for climate change mitigation and adaptation by brokering and negotiating with wider sector groups.
- Provide strategic advice and reporting to senior management, Ministers, schools and kura.
- Set emission reduction targets based on comprehensive and cost-effective business plans for emission reduction interventions.
- Build long term, trusting relationships with senior management, Ministers, schools and kura, communities, key suppliers, iwi, hapū and whanau and the sustainability and climate risk industry.
