About the role
The Principal Advisor - Risk is a trusted advisor to Te Tari Pūreke leadership and executive, providing business and systems risk advice and support; working with business groups and technical staff, both internal and external, to ensure that risk management approaches, tools, practices, and standards meet business requirements.
The Principal Advisor - Risk builds and maintains an assurance programme for recurring activities, chairs regular risk management governance meetings and tracks and reports on risk mitigation activities to help keep the organisation safe and enable people working for Te Tari Pūreke to “do the right thing”.
A key focus is cyber and information security, working with internal teams and third parties to maintain policies, standards, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). They also coordinate with the New Zealand Police Assurance Group and external partners to enhance business continuity and compliance efforts.
In addition, The Principal Advisor - Risk manages others in the assurance team who play an integral role in driving best practices in firearms regulatory compliance, ensuring alignment with national objectives, improving regulatory processes, and shaping the engagement strategy with key stakeholders such as dealers, collectors, and endorsement holders. Their leadership strengthens risk awareness, compliance, and public safety at a national level.
**Key Deliverables**:
Assist the Te Tari Pūreke Executive with effective corporate governance support by leading and supporting regular risk conversations.
Provide the Executive with effective monitoring and visibility on risk and risk management activities, including insider risk.
Offer a central source of expertise and advice on risk management approaches, tools, practices, and standards that meet the needs of stakeholders and the business.
Lead implementation of strategies and processes so risk management is integral to business planning, decision making and the full range of operational and business processes across Te Tari Pūreke, including business continuity and location security.
Develop and leading an annually refreshed Audit and Assurance Work Plan.
Build organisational capability and embedding a culture where everyone understands and takes responsibility for managing risk.
Ensure the Assurance team has the direction, support, skills, and tools necessary for them to achieve Te Tari Pūreke objectives, including providing coaching and professional development opportunities as identified through regular performance conversations and annual performance reviews.
