Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi offers the highest standards of tertiary education from certificate to doctorate levels, including programmes for international scholars of indigenous studies. Our vision is to promote, grow and sustain Māori language, knowledge, and culture, according to tikanga Māori practice.

The programmes are under-pinned by mātauranga Māori and have four core areas of study including whakapapa of bodies of water surrounding a marae or other communities, strategies to protect and manage freshwater and marine ecosystems, contemporary theories and practices to sustain freshwater and marine ecosystems for future generations, and the rights, interests and responsibilities of marae, hapū and iwi regarding freshwater and marine bodies of water.

The 6-month programmes have intakes in February and July of each year. Delivery is mixed mode including classroom activities, water science practicums, tutorials, and eLearning, and Wānanga/marae based noho as well as completing student assessments and evaluation.

We expect applicants to have
- Practical work experience relevant to water resource use as it pertains to whanau, hapū, iwi or community resources use and Kaitiakitanga and relevant work experience in the field of Wai Ora.
- A minimum level 4 or diploma qualification in Tikanga Māori, environmental sciences or related fields.
- A teaching qualification (preferable adult teaching) and relevant adult teaching experience.
- Knowledge of tikanga Māori, and at least intermediate level Te Reo Māori skills
- A relevant network with Mataatua marae, whanau, hapū, iwi or community groups.
- A current full drivers’ licence.
