We are looking for highly skilled counsellor to help build women's strength and resilience while in prison through addressing their trauma histories.
Ngā kawenga | About the role
Evidence indicates that three quarters of women in prison have been victimised through family violence, rape and other sexual assault. Many have long and intergenerational histories of poverty, discrimination, grief and violence. These traumatic experiences can leave women with varied and on-going effects, which can be compounded in prison and impact on their access or readiness to engage in rehabilitative programmes, and wider prison life.
We are seeking to appoint a counsellor at Arohata Prison to work with women struggling with histories and current circumstances of trauma.
The primary purpose of the counsellor's role is to work with women to address historical and current circumstances of trauma. Specifically, the functions this position is accountable for are:

- assessment of women's trauma needs;
- development of treatment plans;
- engaging women in treatment of their trauma related needs;
- referring women to appropriate groups and agencies where necessary; and
- support prison staff to manage women with trauma related needs and/or behaviours;
He kōrero mōu | About you
This role plays an important part in the team working to support the women. You will be tasked with working with women to assess their trauma needs, and engage them in treatment. You will also be tasked with bringing your skills and experience to help other staff in the prison engage more effectively with women suffering from the on-going effects of trauma, and take innovative approaches to improve women's wellbeing so they can create better futures for themselves, their children and wider whānau/families

- enjoy working with women
- have experience working effectively across cultures, especially with Māori women and
- have an ability to build rapport in sometimes difficult situations.

Utu ā-tau | Salary
The salary range is between $60,606 - $80,716. Appointment and remuneration will reflect skills and experience relevant to the role.
