**About the Role | Kōrero mō te tūranga**
Environment Canterbury is changing the way rivers are managed in one of New Zealand's largest, most diverse and naturally stunning regions.
The Rivers Section is responsible for the construction and maintenance of flood protection works, land drainage, fluvial gravel management, delivery of a land survey programme and Braided River Revival/Whakahaumanu ngā awa ā pākihi across the Canterbury region.
As Area Engineer you will be responsible for delivering a programme of work from the Hinds River/Hekeao up to and including the Halswell River/Hurutini.
In this diverse role you will scope, design and deliver physical work programmes, lead and mentor staff, manage projects, collaborate with internal and external stakeholders and ensure best practice in all of our teams’ work.
**About You Mōu**
**To ensure your success, you will need**:
- The ability to lead a small team, work as part of a larger team and work independently in the field when required.
- Experience working in river engineering/flood protection/drainage.
- Sound understanding of geomorphology, fluvial dynamics and river processes.
- Experience working with contractors, coordinating and delivery work programmes and managing budgets.
- Experience with cost control, earned value analysis and financial reporting.
- Practical experience working with resource management, local government and other legislation.
- Experience in the use and delivery of Asset Management Systems and procedures.
- Proven ability to develop and nurture strong relationships with stakeholders and tangata whenua.
- Excellent communication skills - both verbal and written.
- An environmental and health and safety perspective in all aspects of work.
- An ability to respond effectively in times of natural emergency response.
**Desirable attributes include**:
- A tertiary qualification in Natural Resource and/or Civil Engineering.
- Local knowledge of Canterbury and its rivers.
Indicative salary range is $82,000 to $110,000 depending on experience, expertise and location.
