Hamilton, New Zealand Waikato Regional Council Full time

We want more good people to come and do great things with us.

We love where we live. That’s why we work so hard to look after our region and the people who live and work in the Waikato region.

Customers sit at the heart of everything we do, and all staff have an important role to play in the delivery of exceptional customer service.

Our work is as diverse as the region we care for; from the tip of the Coromandel Peninsula to the slopes of Ruapehu. We’ve got ambitious goals and there are some tricky issues, but that’s what makes it so interesting.

We have two summer student roles available in our team this year.

We’re looking for someone who enjoys researching tricky issues, and combining outdoor pursuits with their computer skills. This year our summer student work involves getting into the physical and digital archives, then travelling to the assets spread across our mighty Waikato and Hauraki areas and verifying data as recorded in our Asset Management System or in the original documents.

If you join our team, you will work on real engineering and asset problems, and play a key part as we implement our asset management improvement plan.
- Condition assessments - you’ll be supporting the engineers and operations team, writing or reviewing reports and, ensuring the correct actions are captured.
- Understanding what drains and bunds exist - investigating & identifying from old plans, LIDAR & Google maps where these assets exist but are not yet captured, for addition to the database.
- Quality Assurance of Catchment data, ensuring correct attribute data is associated, so the information can be transferred to the new system.
- Cycling the stopbanks of the Hauraki plains - continuing last year’s research project into the effect of cycleways on stopbank degradation
- Create relationships - you will work across Engineering, Asset Management, Operations, Environmental Compliance and Health and Safety, building competence and confidence.

We need students who enjoy wading through records to find interesting facts. Whether you are doing a diploma in information studies, or studying in science or engineering fields, if you consider ‘research’ to be your passion, then we are willing to consider you.

A Full driver’s license is required, so you can use council vehicles.

An affection for MS Excel would be an advantage, particularly if you think pivot tables are fun. It is also helpful if you enjoy interesting hobbies (and tell us about them in your CV) and have a sense of humour, as it is important that we have great people joining our engineering family, not just great academics.
