The Ministry for the Environment - Manatū Mō Te Taiao is responsible for leading the Government's work in this challenging area, which has major implications for our environment, economy and how we live our lives.
Waste is one of the greatest challenges of our time. We use too much, waste too much and pollute too much - and this has negative impacts on the environment. It means there will be fewer resources available to future generations. Mō tēnei tūrangi mahi | About this role
The Waste and Resource Efficiency section of the Ministry is expanding to meet this challenge through an ambitious and cutting-edge work programme. We are looking for multiple experienced senior policy practitioners, to take on a Senior Policy Analyst - Waste Legislation opportunity to support the delivery of the Waste Minimisation Act (WMA) review project.
We are seeking out passionate individuals who want to get stuck in and utilise their sound policy development or implementation background to be a change agent for the waste sector. These roles are not for the faint hearted - we have a big challenge ahead and those energised and committed will be successful and valued contributors in our team. As a senior member of our team, you will confidently guide and mentor others and feel comfortable acting on behalf of the Ministry, leading external and internal stakeholder relationships.

- Demonstrable experience in policy development and/or policy implementation
- Experience working with technical evidence and data to inform policy
- Experience providing policy advice to senior leaders and Ministers, especially in the absence of full information
- An understanding of waste management issues and the waste sector
- Exposure to regional council policy or central government legislation
- Ability to use your strategic/systems thinking experience to weave together knowledge systems and fill critical gaps in science, research, and data
- Ability to act on behalf of the Ministry, leading external relationships and managing contracts
- Ability to navigate and balance individual views to find consensus
- Confidence to guide and mentor others in their work delivery
- Strong project management, coordination and organisational skills combined with the ability to work in a fast paced and sometimes ambiguous environment
- Keenness to bring Te Ao Māori, Mātauranga and Te Tiriti into your work everyday.
Whānuitanga Utu ā-Tau | Salary range
Salary range for this role is $101,802 to $124,424 pa. Appointment within this range will be based on skills and experience.
