About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced individual to fill the position of Director of Antarctic Operations. This role is based in Christchurch and requires frequent travel.

Key Responsibilities
  • To develop, manage, and execute New Zealand government activities in Antarctica and the Southern Ocean with a focus on science, environment, and health and safety.
  • Strong commitment to the natural environment and leadership in the international treaty system, reflecting core values of a high-performance organisation underpinned by a culture of shared beliefs.
  • Key priority is to achieve the completion of the new Scott Base Redevelopment plan, ensuring resulting infrastructure can adapt to changing needs of science, environmental, and climate change impacts.
Requirements
  • A visible and engaged people leader, comfortable working in complex environments.
  • Expertise in strategy development and execution, driving innovation and change within a scientific research-based organisation.
  • A blend of political savvy and commercial acumen to work with local and international stakeholders.
  • Exceptional communication and influencing skills, with media management experience.
  • Prior Board reporting experience in a CE role or significant second-tier roles.
  • Affinity with the science and research sector is essential.
