Our vision at the Department of Conservation Te Papa Atawhai is to see nature thriving in Aotearoa.
We are committed to protecting and restoring nature and native species across New Zealand. We believe that tangata whenua are inextricably linked to the whenua and te taiao, and we aim for a future where whānau, hapū and iwi can thrive in their role as rangatira and kaitiaki.
This Senior Media and Communications Advisor will report to the Team Lead Regional Communications and lead, influence and deliver strategic media and communications support to DOC's Nelson regional operations teams, as well as support some national portfolios.

- Media Relations: Manage national, regional and local media relationships, including crisis management and supporting Ministerial announcements.
- Iwi and Stakeholder Engagement: Work with Treaty Partners and influence and support internal and external stakeholders, including Ministers and other government agencies.
We are seeking a flexible self-starter and capable multi-tasker who has strong communication planning and writing skills. You will have a natural ability to tell stories using multiple channels, as well as the capability to identify and act on opportunities.
Requirements:
- Experience leading strategic communications and media relations.
- Creative experience telling stories using a range of internal and external communications channels.
- Experience developing and implementing effective systems to manage critical communications issues and risks.
- Ability to quickly understand multiple issues, manage conflicting priorities and operate to a high standard.
- Excellent communicator and collaborator with both internal and external stakeholders.
- Proven ability to provide strategic advice to senior leaders and mentor teams.
- Strong political acumen and judgement to navigate complex landscapes effectively.
- A tertiary qualification in communications, media, public relations or marketing.
- Experience partnering and engaging with iwi and tangata whenua.
- Full New Zealand driver licence.
About the Team:
The Media and Communications Team provides media and strategic external communications support and services across the Department, working closely with the Ministers' offices and senior management.
