About the Role

Aviation Security Service (AvSec) is responsible for providing aviation security in Aotearoa New Zealand. Our team of Explosive Detector Dog Handlers search for explosives within airport environments, working closely with other government agencies to maintain national security.

We are seeking an experienced individual to join our team as a Trainee Dog Handler. This role will involve working at an airport, assigned to a dog, and undergoing comprehensive training. Upon completion, you will graduate as an operational Explosive Detector Dog Handler.

This position requires adaptability, flexibility, and the ability to make clear decisions under pressure. You must be able to work independently and as part of a team, have a growth mindset, and be committed to continuous learning.

To succeed in this role, you must meet the following pre-requisites:

  • Be medically and physically fit and willing to undergo a medical assessment.
  • Be a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident.
  • Hold a full clean New Zealand driver's license.
  • Be able to work rostered shift work, including weekends, nights, public holidays, and be available for emergency recall.
  • Have a suitable property to home a dog, with space for a kennel on a concrete foundation.
