Auckland Council is seeking a dedicated and compassionate individual to support our animal management team. As an Animal Shelter Officer, you will play a vital role in ensuring the well-being of dogs in our shelter.

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Providing proper care, including feeding, exercise, and enrichment activities for all animals.
  • Maintaining a clean and safe environment for all shelter animals.
  • Reuniting lost dogs with their owners and working with dogs that may have behavioural challenges.
  • Assisting with office tasks such as processing paperwork, facilitating adoptions and educational initiatives.
  • Building and maintaining exceptional relationships with internal and external customers.
  • FOLLOWING THE REQUIREMENTS IMPOSED BY THE DOG CONTROL ACT 1996.
  • Assisting the vet with various tasks including euthanasias.

This is a physically demanding role that requires being on your feet for most of the day and involves significant cleaning duties. It is also a highly rewarding role where you will work in a small team with other like-minded people whilst contributing positively to the lives of dogs and their owners.

To succeed in this role, you will need:

  • Flexibility to work across different shelter locations as needed.
  • Ability to work one weekend day and public holidays as required.
  • Physical stamina to handle the demands of the job.
  • Previous experience in animal handling or husbandry is preferred. An animal care or dog behaviour qualification is advantageous but not mandatory.
