Role Overview

The University of Canterbury's Toi Hangarau | Geospatial Research Institute (GRI) is seeking a dynamic researcher to join our team as a Postdoctoral Fellow or Research Associate. This fixed-term position will be based in the GRI at the University of Canterbury, with support from the Ngai Tahu Research Centre, and focuses on leading the mapping of methane emissions from tribal farming initiatives using remote sensing imagery and ground-based data.

This role offers a unique opportunity to work collaboratively with Ngai Tahu, the principal iwi of Te Waipounamu - the South Island of Aotearoa/New Zealand. The successful candidate will have strong research skills and experience in geospatial analysis, machine learning, or computational modelling. Excellent communication skills and written English are also essential.

Main Responsibilities
  • Lead the development and implementation of a comprehensive methane emissions mapping project
  • Work closely with Ngai Tahu to engage cross-culturally and ensure cultural competency
  • Analyse and interpret data using machine learning and computational modelling techniques
Requirements
  • PhD in geomatics, geospatial science, geography, or a related field
  • Strong research background in geospatial analysis, machine learning, or computational modelling
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • A publication track record and experience with presenting research findings to various audiences
