The work of the Science Group at Environment Canterbury consists of providing environmental monitoring and data; and research and advice to internal and external customers. Drawing from different science disciplines, the Science Group plays a key role in informing decision making across most of the organisation including informing organisational strategic intent, processing of consents, our approach to compliance, responding to incidents, the development of plans, and measuring our progress towards regional and national environmental targets.
Reporting to the Team Leader, Contaminated land and Waste Science, this role will provide high level research, technical leadership and advice on contaminated land management.
- Coach and mentor developing staff
- Actively participate in committee and community working groups.
- Conduct research on the impact of contaminated land on Canterbury communities.
- Provide quality assurance of research reports & advice in the field of contaminated land management.
- Actively participate in science leadership across the Science Group at Environment Canterbury.
- Actively participate in national initiatives related to contaminated land management.
From time to time, as required, the role may require work outside of normal work hours for emergency and flood response and to represent Environment Canterbury at meetings and events with partners, other agencies, and the community.
As a science leader you'll have a PhD in a relevant field (contaminated Land) plus at least 7 years professional experience, or a master's degree in a relevant field plus at least 10 years professional experience. You'll also be a Certified Environmental Practitioner - Site Contamination Specialist.
- Experience supporting high-quality resource management decisions and providing evidence in resource management hearings or to the Environment Court.
- Strong communication skills allowing you to interpret complex scientific data for community groups and key decision makers; telling the science story to the varied needs and experience of your audience.
- Data analysis, interpretation and reporting that makes complex information easy for decision makers to understand.
- A collaborative "can do" approach, a passion for science and a commitment to your own ongoing professional development.
- Design and lead research on contaminated land issues within a Canterbury context.
- Ability in forming and maintaining strong, collaborative working relationships.
- Understanding of the Resource Management Act requirements in relation to contaminated land and waste management.
- A commitment to and an understanding of te ao Māori, awareness of the evolving obligations under the Treaty of Waitangi, together with experience of applying this in a workplace setting, including the ability to lead work that requires engagement with iwi.

Salary - The indicative salary range for role is $106,000 to $125,000 per annum depending on skills and experience. The specific salary will be discussed at interview stage.
