About Tohu Whenua

Tohu Whenua is a national tourism programme that aims to connect people with Aotearoa New Zealand's cultural heritage. The programme promotes places of historical significance that offer high-quality visitor experiences.

The programme is a joint initiative of the Ministry for Culture and Heritage, the Department of Conservation, and Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga. It has support from the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment and Te Puni Kokiri Ministry of Māori Development.

Tohu Whenua operates in four regions (Northland, West Coast, Canterbury, and Otago) with a goal to roll out across Aotearoa New Zealand. We work with iwi and community partners to launch historical and cultural sites of significance across the Manawatu-Whanganui region as part of the network.

We are seeking a Cultural Heritage Development Specialist to manage the development of storytelling material, coordinate the site selection process, and organise launch events. The role will work closely with regional staff from partner agencies and report to the Kaiwhakahaere Hotaka Programme Manager.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop storytelling material to enhance the visitor experience
  • Coordinate the site selection process to identify and prioritise cultural sites for development
  • Organise launch events to promote new cultural sites and experiences
  • Work with iwi and community partners to develop strong relationships and ensure cultural sensitivity

Requirements:

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to build strong relationships with iwi and community partners
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a small team
  • Highly organised with excellent time management skills
  • Experience in developing cultural programmes and events

Benefits:

  • Opportunity to work on a national programme with a strong focus on cultural heritage and community engagement
  • Chance to develop strong relationships with iwi and community partners
  • Professional development opportunities within a small team environment
