Job Description

We are currently seeking an experienced Senior Labour Supervisor to join our team at our Claim 431 Vineyard in Central Otago, New Zealand.

The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing daily vineyard operations, supervising a team of workers, ensuring productivity and safety standards are met, and guaranteeing the effective completion of all vineyard tasks.

As a key member of our team, the Senior Labour Supervisor will report to the Vineyard Manager and utilize their leadership skills, knowledge of vineyard practices, and ability to coordinate and manage multiple tasks in a dynamic environment.

This is a full-time, permanent position with a range of responsibilities including:

  • Plant Maintenance – Ensuring the overall health and productivity of our vines through regular maintenance tasks.
  • Pruning (2-3 months each year) – Performing seasonal pruning activities to promote healthy vine growth.
  • Vineyard and Vehicle Operations – Overseeing the daily operations of our vineyard and vehicle fleet.
  • Monitoring and recording – Tracking progress, monitoring weather conditions, and maintaining accurate records.
  • Supervision of Staff – Leading and guiding a team of workers to ensure efficient task completion.
  • Shoot thinning – ensures that there are an adequate number of shoots per cane and that there is appropriate spacing between each shoot as required – Maintaining optimal vine yields through selective shoot thinning.
  • Bud rubbing – ensures all the low growth from the bottom of the vines is removed as required – Removing unwanted buds to promote healthy vine growth.
  • Leaf plucking – ensures any dead or rotten leaves are removed from the vine as required – Maintaining vine hygiene through leaf removal.
  • Cluster thinning – ensures any excess clusters of grapes are removed if vines are too overcrowded – Optimizing grape yields through cluster thinning.
  • De-Latering – ensures any lateral shoots are removed from around bunches of grapes as required – Maintaining vine structure through de-latering.
  • Wire Lifting – ensures all the wires are lifted onto the vines to keep the canopy upright as required – Supporting vine growth through wire lifting.
  • Wire dropping – ensures wires are dropped after pruning vines – Safely removing wires after pruning.
  • Ensures other staff are trained to appropriate standards to assist with performing plant maintenance tasks – Developing team members' skills to ensure efficient task completion.
  • Puts up and removes bird nets as and when required – Protecting our crop from bird damage.
  • Hand harvests as required – Participating in hand harvesting activities as needed.
  • Trains young vines as required – Helping young vines grow and develop.

Requirements
