About the Role
This Gastroenterology Fellowship position offers a structured one-year opportunity to develop specialist skills in General Gastroenterology/Endoscopy/IBD.
You will work closely with our Clinical Director, Consultant Physicians, Registrar, Clinical Nurse specialists and Nurse Practitioner to ensure an efficient and high-quality service.
The successful candidate will be proficient in most of the skills and procedures outlined in the New Zealand Curriculum Framework for Junior Doctors.
Responsibilities include 1:6 Gastroenterology on-call under supervision as needed, research, in- and outpatient specialist service, rural clinics, and endoscopy.
As a Fellow, you will have the opportunity to hone your specialist skills before becoming fully vocationally registered.
This is an excellent opportunity to transition from registrar working under supervision to specialist providing supervision to junior staff.
We offer a varied and challenging array of all aspects in Gastroenterology, including subspecialty clinics in hepatology and IBD which allow research into these disciplines.
We work in close collaboration with the University of Otago.
Key Responsibilities
- Build effective relationships within and external to your team
- Demonstrate excellent decision-making and priority-setting in a clinical environment
- Show enthusiasm for teaching and passing on your knowledge to junior members of staff and University students
- Supervise more junior medical staff within the Unit - education of junior staff in clinical management and procedural techniques (where appropriate)
Requirements
- In your last six months of Gastroenterology advanced training

We are part of Health New Zealand - Te Whatu Ora, the largest geographical coverage of all the New Zealand regions, providing services to 350,000 people in diverse communities.
The Department of Gastroenterology has an in- and out-patient service, overseeing a population of approximately 1000 patients with Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (CCCare Database), approximately 1000 patients with chronic liver disease, undertaking 5000 endoscopic procedures, and staffing clinics in various rural hospitals.

Salary
This role belongs to the ASMS Collective Agreement Fellow Scale NZD $179,480.
