The Pacific Maritime Safety Programme is a Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) programme, funded through the International Development Cooperation programme, developed, and delivered by Maritime NZ.
The PMSP works to develop a strong maritime safety culture throughout the Pacific.
The PMSP works across five key areas of maritime safety: community education and awareness, regulatory frameworks, maritime training, domestic vessel safety and infrastructure, and SAR/oil pollution spill preparedness and response.
The countries currently involved in the programme are Cook Islands, Kiribati, Niue, Samoa, Tokelau, Tonga and Tuvalu.
Te tunga | The role We are looking for a Pacific Maritime Safety Advisor to join us on fixed term contract to June 2026, within the Pacific Maritime Safety Programme team to improve maritime safety in the Pacific region and work closely with maritime administrators to strengthen regulatory, compliance and response environments.
You will provide specialist insight and draw on your technical expertise in maritime safety and maritime environment protection matters to improve safety across the region.
To be successful in the role, you will have:
A strong focus on Safety Management Systems, ISM code, maintenance and audit systemsExperience developing Safety Management Systems and ISM systemsExperience administering maritime legislationUnderstanding of the political, social and economic dynamics of Pacific island statesMaster Mariner or Chief Engineer qualifications would be highly valuedExperience working in the Pacific or Small Island developing states preferredAbility to travel internationally on a regular basisMaritime NZ recognises and respects te Tiriti o Waitangi and we are committed to working with Maori to build strong, meaningful and enduring relationships to achieve mutually beneficial outcomes.

Salary range $117,555 - $143,422 depending on skills and experience + superannuation.
