We are Auckland's home of commemoration as well as the country's oldest research institution and a major tourist destination.Job DescriptionMo te turanga | About the roleThe Museum is embarking on a series of building works and gallery renewals leading up to the celebration of the 100-year anniversary (in 2029) of the museum being in our current location on Pukekawa, the Auckland Domain.
The role of Decant Specialist, Centenary Project is focused on delivering a programme of works to decant, pack and relocate collections from galleries into the collection store.
This is a full-time position for a fixed term period of 18 months.This role is responsible for:Undertaking the safe decant of collection objects from galleriesRepacking and re-housing collection objects to agreed standardsCreating bespoke boxes, crates and mounts (3D) to house collection objectsPreparing objects for condition assessment, conservation stabilisation, re-housing and re-locationRe-organising collection stores under the guidance of Team Leader Centenary Decant Project and Project Manager Collection Special ProjectsPlan and undertake object movementsManage the storage of collections using lifting equipment and machineryCreate new collection database records and enhance information on existing records with updated information on the objects coming off displayDesired Skills and ExperienceA good understanding of collection management practicesTwo years experience in the safe handling, packing and storing of objectsDemonstrate awareness, sound judgement, sensitivity and cultural competency around tikanga and the handling of taonga Maori and Pacific cultural materialVernon database experience an advantageMetal and/or wood working experience in particular crate and pallet making is desirableExperience using mechanical equipment to access objects (e.g.
forklift, wave lifter etc.)
