About the team Within our Information Services & Technology (IST) Division, the Real-Time Systems Team integrates secondary systems, collects their telemetry data from the field, and models/configures the SCADA system to deliver accurate and reliable operational data to enable the operation of the National Grid.
Their work includes:

Configuration and operation of substation automation systems (SAS), human machine interfaces (HMI). Creation of new SCADA / EMS sites, including commissioning and point-to-point testing. Configuring of Remote Engineering Access (REA) to Intelligent Electronic Devices (IED) located at over 170 substations nationwide, to ensure fast and reliable remote access for our engineers and technicians. Providing engineering support and technical advice to project teams and engineering groups around Substation Automation and Control Systems. Investigating the application of new equipment and technology solutions. Validation and ongoing management of telemetry and data extracted from remote systems. We draw on each other's strengths, diversity, and passion to provide the best solutions to ensure safe and reliable operation of the Grid.

Due to internal promotion, based in our Hamilton or Wellington office, in 2025 you could join us in either our RTU or Operations Team Remote Terminal Unit (RTU) Team: The Real-Time Systems RTU Team, is focussed on the Substation Automation Systems (SAS) with its configuration and modelling of RTUs, Human Machine Interfaces (HMI), and Remote Engineering Access.
Those are a crucial component of our critical infrastructure and provide monitoring and control capability to Transpower's national control rooms and enable faster support and troubleshooting for the contracted technicians (employed by our service providers).

In this role you'll be testing and integrating new substation automation equipment to meet Transpower's Standards and maintaining equipment in our extensive engineering environment.
You'll work collaboratively to further enhance our automation journey to drive more efficient delivery of projects and of course deliver the SAS component of the capital and customers projects.

Operations Team: In our Real-Time Systems Operations Team, you will be working across the entire range of Control Systems at Transpower - it's all the way from the Substation Automation Systems, HMIs, to the National SCADA and Remote Engineering Access.
The Operations team provides 24/7 support as the operation of the National SCADA and the associated control systems are a continuous real-time process.

So, what will you bring? To be considered, your CV and cover letter will demonstrate a relevant qualification and:

Well-developed verbal and written communication skills. Working knowledge of automation and control systems, their architectures, and integration of devices into operational technology (OT) environments. The ability to produce sound technical and analytical reports, including process designs, problem analysis, technical guides, and procedures. Sound digital literacy and the ability to learn and use vendor specific software applications (e.g.
EATON SMP Manager). While not essential, the experience/skills in any of the following areas will be well regarded:

Knowledge of SCADA and real time applications within an environment with safety as an imperative. Eaton SMP Gateways. Ability to model control systems, test, and interpret results. Join us at Transpower Aotearoa is powered by the people who work here.
