Every day, they are influencing, advising, and supporting Ministers, Crown CEOs and Government decision-makers to shape our country's collective tomorrow.We have an exciting opportunity for an Economic Modelling Specialist to help establish and grow the in-house CGE modelling capability within the Treasury, alongside leveraging their broader skillset to contribute to other priority aspects of the Treasury's work programme.The Economic Modelling Specialist will act as the lead modeller of a CGE work programme, with core responsibility for running the model alongside providing guidance and technical assistance to develop others' capability in CGE modelling.
The Economic Modelling Specialist is a new role and the CGE modelling programme is a new programme within the Treasury with an initial focus on climate change.
There is also scope to contribute to how organisational capability is grown and leveraged more widely over time.The Economic Modelling Specialist will be expected to mentor other staff in CGE modelling, including focused upskilling of new modellers and providing technical assistance and guidance to more junior staff.There is potential for the successful candidate to also contribute more widely to the Treasury's policy or analytical work.
A broader skillset would therefore be an advantage.
Applicants are strongly encouraged to highlight their broader economic, financial and/or policy qualifications alongside their relevant skills, expertise and attributes relevant to CGE modelling when applying.To succeed in this role, you will need a strong background in economics (or a relevant discipline that has included a focus in economics) and quantitative modelling techniques.
A working understanding of general equilibrium theory and familiarity with CGE modelling will be particularly helpful.While technical capability will be important for success, being a strong team player, with an emphasis on being collaborative, communicative, self-aware and open will be key.We are seeking an experienced candidate with a strong background in economics and economic modelling that can work as part of a small team to build and grow the Treasury's CGE modelling capability.
In particular, we are seeking candidates with:A graduate qualification or higher specialising in economics (or a relevant discipline that has included a focus in economics), modelling techniques or other quantitative disciplineA working understanding of general equilibrium theory and familiarity with Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) models (highly desirable)Proficiency with programming or modelling language; preferably including GAMS (or ability to learn it quickly)Familiarity with climate change and the economics of climate change or other structural economic issues (desirable, but not essential)Strong written and verbal skills with the ability to communicate issues and concepts clearly, succinctly and with influence, including the ability to present empirical analysis and modelling to lay and technical audiencesCapability and commitment to upskill and mentor others to build technical capability.In addition to the above, we are open to candidates with broader qualifications and experience in economics, finance and policy.We are also seeking candidates who:Are strong team players, with an emphasis on being collaborative, communicative, self-aware and open with the ability to listen, respect and take on board the perspectives of other people and disciplines; a degree of humilityAre able to build and maintain relationships and networks with a diverse range of stakeholdersCan prioritise work in a complex and dynamic work environmentHave passion and enthusiasm for the role, with the ability to take initiative and make things happen.Please see the Job Description for additional information.Ko nga hua | What we OfferThis is an important job and that's why we'll do all we can to support your success.
