Middlemore Hospital is situated in a lower socio-economic area and serves a culturally diverse, high need population with high acuity presentations.
The department is accredited with the Australasian College of Emergency Medicine (ACEM) for 36 months of training as a mixed Tier 1 Emergency Department.Middlemore Hospital ED is a busy Major Trauma Centre seeing approximately 300 major trauma patients (ISS >13) per year as well as acting as the quaternary centre for spinal cord, mangled limb and burns patients.
The hospital is well supported by dedicated Trauma, Burns and Spinal Cord teams and has an active trauma committee that provides governance and oversight.
The hospital also provides immediate care for walk-in paediatric trauma patients and maintains excellent links with the local cardio thoracic and neurosurgical centres via the Northern Regional Trauma Committee.
