Teaching Fellow/Professional Practice Fellow - Early Learning in MedicineTe Pokapu Aurorotanga/Centre for Early Learning in Medicine (CELM) at Otago Medical School is recruiting for 2025 Teaching Fellow/Professional Practice Fellows in our Early Learning in Medicine (ELM) programme, based in Dunedin.Staff in the CELM, along with staff in the Dunedin School of Medicine (DSM) and School of Biomedical Sciences (BMS), are responsible for teaching in years 2 & 3 of the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MB ChB) Programme.ELM consists of a series of modules that utilise lecture, laboratory, tutorial, healthcare and community-based learning opportunities, covering a curriculum framework based on holistic models of care (Te Whare Tapa Wha; Fonofale; biopsychosocial).Included are three modules co-ordinated out of CELM taught mainly in small group tutorial sessions (11-13 students):Clinical Skills: delivers instruction in history taking, physical examination and clinical reasoning skills. Peer examination, simulated patients (actors) and volunteer patients from the community, provide opportunities for practice of clinical skills, with instruction and facilitation by medically qualified tutors.Early Professional Experience (EPE): provides students with a wide range of opportunities to work with patients and other health professionals. These learning experiences are supported by tutorial-based discussions (facilitated by qualified health professionals), and collectively these introduce students to various social, clinical and professional issues, which help students bridge the gap between the theory and practice of clinical medicine.Integrated Cases: is based on a series of clinical cases and scenarios, each of which extends over two weeks and enables learning from other ELM modules to be extended and integrated around a clinical problem. The learning is active and task based, with facilitation by tutors who may or may not have a medical qualification.The role/Te mahi:As a Teaching Fellow/Professional Practice Fellow, you will be teaching second and third year MBChB students in the Early Learning in Medicine (ELM) programme.Applicants could teach into any or a combination of all three above modules, depending on your qualifications and experience.Key tasks include:Preparing for and leading small group tutorials.Facilitating learning.Assisting with assessment, including providing feedback on both academic and professional development of students.These roles would be suited to health professionals, or pre-clinical/biomedical scientists who have a background in health education. Ideally applicants will have experience in teaching at an undergraduate level or in clinical environments.Successful candidates will have:An understanding of, and commitment to, Te Tiriti O Waitangi in the University environment.A student-centred approach that seeks to foster the strengths of each student.A desire to embrace the diversity of the ELM student cohort.Experience of, and commitment to the principles and practice of modern medical education.A relevant biomedical science or health professional qualification.An appreciation of the value of interdisciplinary teamwork and reflective practice.An ability to work effectively with learning management systems (e.g. Moodle).A high level of professionalism in all interactions with staff and students from differing academic and cultural backgrounds and at all levels of the institution.We have multiple part time, fixed term opportunities available based in Dunedin.Part time hours are available varying from 0.1 – 0.8 FTE a week, negotiable with successful candidates.These fixed term appointments will be from February – October 2025, with the potential for opportunities related to end of year assessments extending into November.Successful candidates will be appointed as either a Teaching Fellow/Senior Teaching Fellow or Professional Practice Fellow/Senior Professional Practice fellow, dependent on skills, qualifications, and experience.The University of Otago salary bands for a Teaching and Professional Practice Fellows are $70,69 to $96,058 per annum (pro-rata).
