Our Taranaki laboratory provides community pathology services, serving a population of approximately 125,000.

About the role | Mō te tūranga:

  • We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated individual to take the lead in our Taranaki lab as the Head of Department - Specimen Services. This is a full-time permanent role, working 65-80 hours per fortnight.
  • In this pivotal role, you will oversee the operation of our busy Specimen Services department and be responsible for driving process improvement initiatives to ensure efficient and accurate processing of specimens.
  • Responsible for Specimen Reception, Data Entry, Call Centre, and testing referred out of region.
  • Prepare rosters which include weekday, evening, and weekend staffing.
  • Lead, motivate, and mentor a team of approximately 7 staff members.
  • Foster a collaborative and positive work environment, promoting open communication, teamwork, and employee engagement.
  • Evaluate existing specimen reception processes and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Ensure compliance with accreditation standards and laboratory policies within the Specimen Services department.
  • Collaborate with other department heads, laboratory management, and external stakeholders to optimize processes and ensure smooth workflow coordination.
  • Excellent leadership and team management skills, able to motivate and inspire staff members to achieve departmental goals.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Previous supervisory and/or staff management experience including roster planning/management.
  • Demonstrated track record in process improvement, workflow optimization, and implementing quality management systems.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to handle challenges in a proactive and effective manner.
  • The ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment.
  • Ideally registered with the Medical Sciences Council of NZ and have a current APC.
  • Be available to work flexible hours including days, evenings, and weekends if required.
  • Proficiency in using laboratory information systems (LIS) and other relevant software applications.
