Formed in 1971, the Te Awahōhonu Forest Trust owns two large scale sheep and beef farms, a 5,869ha commercial forest, and 10,000ha of pristine native forest. A Board of five Trustees is responsible for protection of the Trust’s assets on behalf of approximately 1,500 shareholders. The Trust has a history of business excellence resulting from strong internal governance, a clear vision, and experienced and loyal staff.

About The Opportunity

An exciting opportunity is now available for a highly capable and suitably experienced Executive Manager to provide strategic leadership to our organisation in the newly created role of Chief Executive Officer.

This is a permanent position working out of the offices of the Trust’s Secretary in Ahuriri, Napier. Initially, the role is being offered on a part-time basis (up to 25 hours per week for 12-months), then full-time thereafter.

Reporting to our Trust Chair, and working with our Trustees and the Secretary, you will develop and implement strategies that will ensure the achievement of optimal performance from all investments and grow the Trust’s assets. Such strategies will be aligned with the overall purpose of the Trust, as well as with the aspirations of the shareholders.

You will assume full accountability for all business functions across the group, providing leadership to the staff and driving growth.

The commencement date for this role is flexible and will be agreed with the successful applicant. We envisage this will be circa March/April 2025.

About You

In this instance, we are seeking candidates who bring a proven track record in executive management roles within a Māori setting. This includes a high level of cultural intelligence (Tikanga/ Te Reo competency). You will provide knowledge and experience of Māori approaches to business, environmental and social functions. You will proactively seek to promote the Trust as a model of Kaupapa Māori leadership.

In addition to the above, you will bring:

  • Strong strategic management capability - ability to develop and implement organisational strategy
  • Excellent operational leadership skills with the ability to lead and inspire a team
  • Commercial acumen – ability to drive revenue growth, assist with the investment strategy and explore new investment opportunities
  • Ability to build relationships and networks on behalf of the Trust
  • A tertiary qualification in Business Management/ Accounting or relevant equivalent experience
  • Ideally, you’ll bring relevant experience gained in the primary sector (Farming and Forestry)

This is a significant leadership opportunity with a strong strategic and operational focus.

An appropriate remuneration package will be agreed with the successful applicant. This will reflect the strategic importance of this key role and will comprise a salary, vehicle (full use), laptop and mobile.
